Sailing Ship
A tall ship under full sail — white opalescent glass billowing above a golden hull, riding teal waves, grounded on a piece of reclaimed barn wood that's been to sea in its own way.
The Story
The base originated from a piece of salvaged wood that a fellow maker donated— old growth wood, sun-bleached and rough-grained, with the kind of texture and history that takes time to earn. The artist grabbed a section and set it aside without knowing what it would become. When she started this project, the wood was waiting — reminiscent of an ancient weathered ship deck.
The sails are off-white opalescent glass — not quite transparent, not completely opaque, so they hold light the way real canvas holds wind. Teal waves were fashioned out of scrap glass from Kokomo’s Ragland park — hand selected and ground by the artist into rolling waves. The whole assembly stands freely on the wooden base — the ship's keel and waves are fastened into grooves that hold them upright without any fasteners.
